De Zerbi and the evolution of the goalkeeper: Guardiola, Klopp and Gasp have challenged me

Roberto De Zerbi, Brighton’s head coach, has recently shared some insights about the evolution of the goalkeeper’s role in a conversation with Brescia Oggi, an Italian daily newspaper.

De Zerbi noted the importance of the goalkeeper in shaping the dynamics of the game. “Today, the role of the goalkeeper is transforming into an additional player on the field during the construction phase,” he explained on Brescia Oggi.

Drawing from his experience this year, De Zerbi used the example of two matches his team, Brighton, played against Liverpool and Manchester City. In both games, he had prepared a man-to-man defensive strategy. However, he admits that his plans were disrupted as Liverpool’s Jurgen Klopp and Manchester City’s Pep Guardiola employed their goalkeepers beyond the penalty area, effectively turning them into outfield players.

De Zerbi confirmed the similar changes in the dynamics of Serie A matches dating back to his Sassuolo days. Playing against Gian Piero Gasperini’s Atalanta and Ivan Juric’s Verona, De Zerbi had to completely alter his strategy as compared to when playing against other teams.

Given these reflections, it seems the role of the goalkeeper in modern football extends far beyond the traditional duty of preventing goals and has become a significant factor in a team’s overall strategy.
