San Siro appeal process extends, city council says

There has been an extension in the timeline for the appeal on the future of the San Siro stadium in Milan. The municipal authority of Milan has to tackle an appeal against the Administrative Tribunal of Lombardy (TAR) on a case relating to the superintendency constraints over the second tier of the San Siro Stadium. Should this be confirmed, it could result in the definitive halt to the demolition of the home ground of Inter Milan and AC Milan.

In an official announcement discussing the new date set for the hearing, it was highlighted that the complexities of the issues raised by both parties necessitate further examination.

The statement from the TAR of Lombardy, as consulted by Calcio e Finanza, explains, “Given the complexity of the issues raised by the parties, it requires the in-depth investigations typical of the merits phase, resulting in the fixing of the hearing for the relative discussion.”

Furthermore, the statement also clarifies, “Given, for the purposes of observing the terms referred to in Art. 87 CPA, to set for the handling of the application for access ex Art. 116 CPA, the Council Chamber of 29.01.2024”. The decisive move from the Third Section of the TAR of Lombardy is therefore to set the hearing for the discussion of merits on 14 March 2024.

More information on the case is expected to emerge as the hearing date approaches. The outcome of this appeal could play a significant role in the future of one of the most iconic football stadiums in Italy, and indeed the world. The San Siro, known formally as the Stadio Giuseppe Meazza, has been the shared home of city rivals Inter Milan and AC Milan for over 70 years.
