Torino’s victory at home against Como last night provided a much-needed morale boost for Paolo Vanoli’s squad. Following four consecutive defeats, the Granata secured a crucial three points, thanks to Nije’s 75th-minute goal, ending a month-long winless streak at the home ground of the Mole.
Davide Vagnati, the sporting director, was visibly one of the most elated figures on the pitch at the Grande Torino following the final whistle.
However, for the former Spal manager, the on-field performance is not his sole focus at the moment.
Vagnati is working diligently behind the scenes, with an eye on the upcoming January transfer window, where Torino will need to find a replacement for their long-term absentee Zapata.
Simultaneously, the Genoa native is paradoxically striving towards securing a rather special contract renewal: his own.
Having joined the club in the spring of 2020, Vagnati’s current contract is set to expire in 2025.
A few months ago, on 4th May, Torino President Urbano Cairo publicly asserted his desire to continue collaborating with the Ligurian colleague.
Yet, what initially appeared to be a formality has been delayed, and months later, there is still no sign of Vagnati’s signing of a new deal.
It should be noted that both parties remain in constant contact.
Vagnati and Cairo have met recently, both at the Filadelfia training centre on Tuesday and again last night at the stadium for the Torino-Como match.
Their relationship is reportedly harmonious, and both are aligned in their future plans, although, as mentioned, the timeline might not be rapid.
The negotiations are crucial, and the final two months of 2024 could prove decisive.
The victory over Como has dispelled the clouds hovering over Torino, allowing them to work calmly in anticipation of the approaching winter transfer market.
