Genoa-Juve 1-1: Gudmundsson responds to Chiesa’s penalty

The 16th round of Italy’s Serie A 2023/2024 season saw Genoa host Juventus at the Marassi. The match concluded with a 1-1 draw.

The match began with Juventus seeking to set the early pace and intensity. The first considerable attempt on goal came on the 6th minute from Ukraine’s Malinovskyi whose strike was foiled by Juventus’ goalkeeper Szczesny. Another significant moment occurred on the 14th minute when Chiesa made a dramatic run into the penalty area but his subsequent shot was intercepted by Martinez, Genoa’s goalkeeper.

A flurry of activity in the first half hour included a missed opportunity by Vlahovic on the 22nd minute – he couldn’t finish off a brilliant cross from Chiesa. Then, in the 27th minute, a mistake by Badelj of Genoa led to a penalty in favour of Juventus. Chiesa took the penalty and successfully scored, leaving the goalkeeper Martinez off balance.

The game’s momentum shifted in the second half, with Gudmundsson of Genoa scoring an equaliser in the 48th minute. Ekuban adeptly handled a difficult ball and supplied a head pass that Gudmundsson converted, leaving Juventus’ defence stunned.

The match continued with several opportunities for both teams, including a clearance by Szczesny in the 74th minute which was crucial in anticipating an attack by Ekuban.

The match concluded with a 1-1 draw, one each from Chiesa and Gudmundsson. The standout player of the match, as per Calcionews24, was Gudmundsson who netted the equaliser for Genoa.

Referee Massa handed out yellow cards to Danilo, McKennie, Milik, Badelj, and Malinovskyi. Juventus’ coach, Allegri also received a yellow card for removing his jacket in frustration.
