Italian striker Nicolò Zaniolo has scored his first goal of the season whilst playing for Aston Villa in the UEFA Conference League stage. He had been noticeably lacking in form after an investigation was launched into a betting scandal.
However, he was able to recover during the Aston Villa’s match against Mostar that took place last night. His goal was scored in the 61st minute, following a cross delivered by John McGinn. Zaniolo’s decisive play positioned him correctly, enabling him to score a significant goal – subsequently equating to a draw that led Aston Villa straight into the round of 16, bypassing the playoffs for the Conference League.
The all-important goal was shared by Aston Villa’s official twitter account on December 14, 2023 with the caption “He’s off the mark.”
Unai Emery, the manager of Aston Villa in an after-match comment, touched on the importance of this milestone for Zaniolo. “It’s vital for them to gain trust and minutes. Tonight was perfect with the draw and the result, and perfect for giving opportunities to some players,” Emery said, referring indirectly to the Italian striker.
The goal not only marks a turnaround for Zaniolo in his club career but also serves as good news for Italy’s international team led by manager, Luciano Spalletti, who hopes to see a motivated Zaniolo in action in the upcoming Euro Championship.
