It’s now official: Wojciech Szczesny is the new goalkeeper for Barcelona.
The Polish shot-stopper, who had announced his retirement from professional football following the conclusion of his stint with Juventus, makes an immediate return to the pitch.
Szczesny has signed a contract that will keep him at the club until 30 June 2025, earning a net salary of 2 million euros. He shared his thoughts in an interview with the club’s official channels.
“Robert Lewandowski was instrumental. He was the first person who thought of me and called me to ask if I was open to the possibility of playing again,” Szczesny said.
“Initially, I wasn’t sure if I was ready for new professional challenges, but I spoke with my family and friends, and they all told me it would be foolish not to take this opportunity.”
He continued, “It’s a moment of pride for me. Honestly, I was ready to retire. I was content, but in the two days I’ve spent in the city, the way people have treated me and the significance of the club to them, I feel proud to be a part of this.”
“Barça is a great institution, and for me, this is very important. That’s why I’ve decided to extend my career a bit longer.”
Discussing his impressions so far, Szczesny said, “Barça has a fantastic social base, and in a short time, I’ve witnessed the passion of its fans. Yesterday, I was at the stadium, and the team looks incredible. It’s an exciting challenge for me, one that I’m approaching with energy and enthusiasm. I’m ready to work.”
