Nico Williams, one of Spain’s standout players from their European Championship-winning squad, has opened up about his decision to reject an offer from Barcelona to stay with Athletic Bilbao. Speaking to *El Mundo*, Williams shared his thoughts on the matter.
“Ultimately, you have to live with it,” he said, referencing the constant attention from clubs, media, and players. “Football operates like this, with numerous interests surrounding your name if you perform well. It’s neither good nor bad—it simply is what it is and doesn’t affect my performance. I continue to do the same work I’ve done so far.”
Williams admitted it was a challenging time, considering various scenarios but is grateful for his supportive family and friends. “I hope this doesn’t happen every summer,” he added.
On the topic of his summer statement about staying “one more year,” which was not well received by fans, Williams said, “I’m not thinking about that now. The fans are very happy that I’m staying here, and I’m very happy to be here. Bilbao is my home, and I want to keep enjoying it.”
He expressed a clear sense of satisfaction, stating, “I’ve always viewed things clearly, and I think people see that. I believe I’m doing very well and am trying to bring Athletic to the top of Spain and Europe, with this final at San Mamés we are so excited about. That’s the only thing that matters now.”
