The Director of Sports for Shakhtar Donetsk, Carlo Nicolini, has voiced his commentary after the team’s relegation from Champions League to the Europa League playoffs. This was during a discussion with RadioUnicusano.
Nicolini, specifically anticipating the playoff matches, recognized the elevated standard of the Europa League in its latest editions, with noteworthy teams like Roma and Sporting Lisbon leading the pack. He singled out the formidable calibre of these teams.
In particular, Nicolini expressed concerns about playing against Roma, led by Mourinho. According to Nicolini, not only does Roma boast international experience and high-level players, but it also poses a significant risk in any individual match.
He noted particularly challenging circumstances, regarding the timing of the game. “Considering the time of year we’re going to play, it will be very hard facing Roma that’s in its peak form, while we will be playing our first official game, after the winter break. Therefore, we won’t have the game rhythm in our legs”, Nicolini revealed to RadioUnicusano.
This clash is expected to test Shakhtar Donetsk’s resolve given the team’s taxing travel conditions. As Nicolini outlined, the process involves a day-long bus journey out of Ukraine and another full day’s journey back into the country. Despite being based in Lviv, they are expected to play their home games in Hamburg, adding to their logistical challenges.
