The Serie A league is considering the option of restructuring the Italian championship to contain eighteen teams. This potential reduction from the present 20-team format has sparked a debate, with top-flight teams supporting the proposal while smaller clubs oppose the change.
In an informal meeting held recently, no agreement was reached on the matter but will be addressed in a further meeting arranged by Gabriele Gravina, the president of the Italian Football Federation.
According to renowned sports publication La Gazzetta dello Sport, an extraordinary general meeting is to be held on 11th March. In the event of an absence of consensus at this meeting, the requirement for consensus could be rescinded. This development could make it more likely for two teams to be cut from Serie A.
