Maspero believes Torino need a leader to replace Zapata, considers his absence significant, and opposes signing free agents.

Riccardo Maspero, a former Torino player from 2000 to 2003, has shared his insights on the current situation at the club, following the significant setback caused by Duván Zapata’s injury. In an interview with *Corriere della Sera*, Maspero spoke candidly about the challenges facing the Granata without their star striker.

Discussing the impact of Zapata’s absence, Maspero said, “It is quite significant, and there’s no hiding it, because he was the main offensive outlet. He was crucial both morally, as his example propelled the team, and technically, with his ability to finish and create opportunities for his teammates by keeping opposing defenders busy.”

When asked about the severity of the injury for the 33-year-old Zapata, Maspero was optimistic. “I think age is secondary in such cases. What matters most is the desire and determination to make a complete and rapid recovery, with patience and hard work. Given Duván’s professionalism, I’m very optimistic that he will return to his previous levels, I’m sure of it,” he stated.

Addressing the possibility of signing free agents, Maspero warned, “Signing free agents is always a gamble, as they are often not in a condition to play immediately and can require at least a month for reconditioning, if not more. It might be better to wait for the January transfer window, which undoubtedly provides more options to replace a crucial player like Zapata.”

Finally, on the topic of Nikola Vlašić’s return to form, Maspero was hopeful. “I definitely think so. He is an important player with evident qualities, and now he is called upon to offer them to the team after a long period of inactivity. His return allows Vanoli to raise the technical quality between midfield and attack,” Maspero concluded.
