Controversy has erupted following the Capital derby in the Coppa Italia with Roma manager, José Mourinho, criticising the penalty awarded to Lazio. According to Mourinho, this was a modern penalty awarded due to VAR, which would not have been granted in past times.

Lazio responded with a definitive image on their social media platforms with the caption: “This is a penalty even on Mars”. The image showed the contact between Huijsen and Castellanos that led referee Orsato and the VAR to award the 11-meter shot, which was successfully converted by Zaccagni and ultimately decided the derby.

The controversial image was posted on Lazio’s official Twitter account.
