In an interview with Italian newspaper La Gazzetta dello Sport, French coach Laurent Blanc discussed the upcoming Champions League clash between Napoli and Barcelona.
Blanc praised Napoli’s defensive capabilities. He stated, “I discovered the true culture of defence at Napoli. It seemed as if your players were born with the soul of a defender.” He indicated that although Italian football is evolving in a positive aspect, Barcelona, as a pillar of Spanish football known for their offensive and creative style, will have to contend with such formidable defence.
Blanc further impressed upon Napoli’s success, comparing it to extraordinary times during Maradona’s era. The achievement, according to Blanc, is attributable to Manager Luciano Spalletti, whom he referred to as one of the best. “Winning the Scudetto was something extraordinary, just like it was in Maradona’s time. The credit goes to Spalletti, one of the best coaches,” he stated. He noted the challenge of maintaining success, particularly in the Champions League, but affirmed that Napoli, as a big club, has demonstrated its prowess by retaining top talent.
Regarding Barcelona, Blanc highlighted their predicament, both in financial terms and in their aspirations of conquering the Champions League. He said, “Barcelona’s financial situation is complicated, but winning La Liga is natural.” He admits, however, that it’s an attestation to former player Xavi Hernández’s impact as a coach, who according to Blanc, is reviving the club’s traditional football values. Yet, he warned that to stay on top in the Champion League, sufficient resources are vital.
