Barcelona’s head coach, Xavi Hernandez, shared his thoughts in his team’s forthcoming championship battle against Almeria. Xavi’s comments have been sourced from the Spanish news outlet, Sport.
On roster strengthening, Xavi revealed, “We always want to strengthen the squad and need to find the missing pieces. With Gavi’s injury, we need someone with his qualities, but it’s challenging. I’m working closely with Laporta and Deco to fortify the team.”
On Napoli, Xavi observed, “They are the reigning champions of Italy, not having won the title since Maradona’s days. They are in a similar situation as us, despite changing their coach to Mazzarri, who is more defensive. There are still two months left, but we intend to progress to the quarterfinals.”
Regarding Vitor Roque, Xavi warned, “We can’t put all the pressure on a youngster, as we did with Lamine Yamal. We must work as a team, making a difference in all areas of the pitch. We have done well in the Champions League, but the nine points from Girona were due to a lack of effectiveness. We need to start climbing up in the league again from tomorrow; it will be hard, but we’ll try. It’s not all Lewandowski’s or Raphinha’s fault.”
When asked about Girona, Xavi shared, “Without a doubt, they are a direct rival and will fight to win the championship. They play very well, with an excellent approach, and have had a great transfer window. Their playing style is similar to ours.”
On coaching Barcelona, Xavi admitted, “I am happy with myself and the staff, and I’m very stubborn. I feel awful when we lose or when things aren’t working. Yet, I am upbeat, work enthusiastically, and believe that we can finish the season well. Sometimes it feels even unpleasant to be Barca’s coach, but that’s what it takes at this level.”
Finally, when reflecting on 2023, Xavi said, “The most positive thing is the two titles we’ve won, the Supercup and the championship. We regret missing the other two objectives.”
