Barcelona’s sporting director comments on De Jong’s contract renewal amidst incoming offers.

In an exclusive interview with *Mundo Deportivo*, Deco, the sporting director of Barcelona, discussed at length the contract renewal of Frenkie de Jong.

Deco stated, “I repeat, we shouldn’t individualise because otherwise, we would only be talking about renewals. I think they will be done in due time. It’s very clear to me.”

He further explained, “The club, in addition to wanting to be here, also makes decisions. But now is not the time to worry about restructuring work that’s two years old; we must first focus on what we need to do.”

When asked about potential offers, Deco maintained discretion, saying, “I can’t provide information on everything we have because otherwise, I’d have to explain everything we’re doing every day. Player renewals, in my way of working, are discreet, and I don’t need to explain what I do to agents out of respect.”

Regarding de Jong, Deco mentioned, “In Frenkie’s case, it’s a normal procedure. We have a player with quality, at an important age, who can offer a lot. So, we’re working on the renewals.”

Nonetheless, Deco stressed the importance of not personalising the issue. “I don’t want to individualise. In the end, the work is there, but I don’t want to prioritise things that are not the most important. This is the daily work we must carry out.”

He concluded, “I don’t want to individualise because I think it’s not fair for the team and it’s not the right time, but work is being done. Of course, they are working because these are players we consider important for the club, for the future and present project, but there are more important things.”
