Silvestri equals Gattuso’s long-standing 2011 record

Bologna’s Lorenzo de Silvestri has equalled a nine-year record, formerly held by ex-midfielder Gennaro Gattuso.

According to sports statistics collective OptaPaolo on Twitter, de Silvestri’s recent header goal against Frosinone was the first of its kind scored outside the box in Serie A since Gattuso’s goal on May 14, 2011, against Cagliari.

Since the former AC Milan midfielder’s 2011 success, it’s been almost a decade since we’ve seen anyone attempt, let alone succeed at, a header goal from outside the area in Italy’s top league.

Creating further parallels with Gattuso, who is now known for his managerial career, de Silvestri’s noteworthy accomplishment has raised some eyebrows among football commentators and fans alike.
