The future of Maurizio Sarri at the helm of Lazio has been called into question following a challenging spell, with speculation around his sacking becoming increasingly rampant, reports Italian publication Il Messaggero.
There is a significant obstacle, however, standing in the way of this severance – the white and sky-blue club’s President Claudio Lotito reportedly has no intention of terminating the head coach’s contract.
The issue appears to be of a considerably economic nature. If Lotito were to dismiss Sarri, he would be obliged to pay out at least 10 million Euros, gross, until the end of his contract in 2025.
The financial implications of Sarri’s departure make it a complicated decision for Lazio. While the club is dissatisfied with recent results, the financial setback associated with an early termination of Sarri’s contract might just tip the scale in favor of the Italian manager staying on.
As the situation remains fluid, Lazio fans and followers of Italian football will no doubt be keeping a close eye on whether the club will opt for a costly separation, or maintain faith in Sarri’s ability to turn the tide.
