Lecce president Saverio Sticchi Damiani has spoken out following the team’s draw against AC Milan, raising concerns over the use of Video Assistant Referee (VAR) in the match. Speaking to DAZN, he said, “the final was a fairy tale, ruined by a VAR that is used in a diabolical way.” Damiani questioned the consistency of VAR usage across matches and emphasized that they “risk ruining the beauty of this sport” due to the current implementation.
He also explained that he isn’t pointing fingers at specific teams but asking for “uniform criteria” in VAR usage, as certain matches have seen more VAR intervention than others. The Lecce president aims to convey positive messages about referees and seeks clarity on whether VAR is essential and used in the same way across all matches.
