Lazio midfielder Danilo Cataldi expressed his disappointment following his team’s 2-1 defeat to Salernitana. Speaking to Sky Sports after the match, Cataldi voiced his concerns about the team’s performance and standing in the league.
“What’s happening? I don’t know, it’s a complicated question. This team shouldn’t be in this place in the league, we all know that,” Cataldi said. He added that Lazio’s performance fell short of expectations, even though he felt the team had put up a tough fight in the first half.
During the second half of the match, however, Cataldi perceived a lack of proactive action from his teammates – a habit that, in his words, “inevitably leads [them] to suffer”. He stressed that the team must change direction or risk their objectives moving further out of reach.
Addressing concerns about specific areas of Lazio’s game, Cataldi said: “There isn’t one main aspect, there are various things. Both mentally and tactically,” he said. He ruled out comparing the present season with previous ones, beyond team performance, pinpointing an urgent need for improvement.
Cataldi also touched on the issue of Norbert Gyomber’s yellow card during the game, saying, “I start from the assumption that it’s not an excuse, but I think it was too blatant an episode to be viewed like that”. He criticised the referee’s handling of that incident, stating that “an Serie A referee, three meters away, cannot not extract the yellow. I would have expected more than not giving the penalty, even though it was clear, but on that intervention it was too much”.
In a nutshell, the stalwart midfielder called for a higher level of competence in Lazio’s play and expressed his concerns over the team’s league standing and overall performance.
