Ahead of Roma’s Europa League match against Sheriff, Tiago Pinto, the general manager of Roma, discussed the team’s current difficulties in an interview with Sky Sports.
Pinto recognised the challenges faced by the defensive department, stating uncertainty over defender Chris Smalling’s return. Furthermore, he mentioned that Kumbulla, another defender, is back in training with the team.
However, Pinto went on to express concerns about defender N’Dicka’s potential absence due to the Africa Cup of Nations, hinting that the team may face further problems. “With N’Dicka in Africa Cup, we will be in trouble,” he told Sky Sports.
In light of these concerns, Pinto admitted the necessity of bringing in reinforcements during the transfer window. “In the market, we have to do something and we are all aligned on this need,” Pinto said. However, he also highlighted that the club also has to abide by financial fair play rules and balance both sports and economic aspects.
Speaking on the future of their manager, Mourinho, Pinto assured that there is clear understanding and clarity regarding Mourinho’s role at the club.
Interestingly, Pinto confessed that he is not keen on playing against Benfica, a renowned Portuguese club. However, he expressed a resolve to triumph should such a situation arise. “I am not lying: I do not want to play against Benfica, but if we play, I want to win,” he said.
The general manager acknowledged the strength of their prospective opponents in the Europa League, conceding that while the games will present challenges for Roma, he believes they will be equally difficult for their opponents as well.
