Atalanta Milan analysis by Calvarese: Giroud’s 1-1 draws discussion

Former referee, Gianpaolo Calvarese, has provided his usual analysis of the incidents in the Atalanta-Milan match, focusing on the performance of the referee, La Penna.

Calvarese evaluated La Penna’s refereeing: “This is La Penna’s second important game of the season. Rocchi is relying on him, and after a long chase, he wants to reach stability. Yet following his good performance in the Napoli-Fiorentina match in October, this Roman referee provides a discontinuous performance both in terms of technical and disciplinary aspects, in a not-so-simple match.”

Calvarese went on to discuss a controversial moment in the match: “The most debated incident is the one that occurred before Giroud’s 1-1 goal. In the action leading to the corner kick of the goal, Musah pushes Lookman down with both hands. The Atalanta forward had stopped the ball with his chest and was about to play it. The objective of the Milanese midfielder is not to intercept the ball, but to block the opponent. For this reason, a foul was missing in favour of Atalanta. However, the VAR could not intervene.”
