Lazio’s Sarri says Verona’s goal was chance, feels bitterness

Lazio’s head coach, Maurizio Sarri, has shared his thoughts on the recent narrow 1-0 victory over Genoa in the round of 16 of the Coppa Italia.

Speaking to Mediaset following the match, Sarri expressed his disappointment with his team’s inability to capitalise on an advantage for around 12 to 13 minutes. Despite his team controlling the match and not conceding a single shot on goal, Sarri admitted that there was a lot of regret on not being able to seal the game.

“We had the game in hand,” Sarri stated, lamenting that the only goal was more of an attempted cross by Genoa’s player than an intentional goal. Sarri indicated his dissatisfaction with the failure to make the most of the opportunities that came their way, but he also praised his team’s overall performance.

“I saw many positive signals,” said Sarri. He described his team as having a “good attitude” and being proactive. Sarri was particularly proud of how his team managed to give nothing away in terms of competition, promoting a measured evaluation of their performance.

The coach also extended sympathy to the multitude of dedicated Lazio supporters who had turned out for the match. “We regret it for the spectators. We were followed by many Lazio fans who made themselves heard,” he added.
