Barton criticises: Too many women commenting on football, calls for merit-based selection

Former Premier League footballer Joey Barton has sparked debate with his recent statements to Piers Morgan.

Barton was quoted as saying, “I don’t want to see sexism in football, but if we don’t adequately discuss this problem, the situation will only worsen and ruin the experience of watching top-level men’s football.”

He attributes sexism in the sector to a lack of meritocracy. “Qualified people are needed to occupy these positions. Everyone has the right to comment,” Barton said, according to his statement to Piers Morgan.

However, he raised a point about credibility and journalistic standards over symbolism. Although he believes that everyone has a right to comment on any sport, he thinks it boils down to credibility and maintaining a certain level of professional journalism, rather than mere symbolism.
